The first round of the 2015 British GP125 Championship was held this weekend at Donington Park. It was the first time Andy and the St Neots Motorcycles team had been in the BSB paddock for a number of years. Expectations for the weekend were realistic but were far exceeded by the time the end of qualifying came on Sunday morning, qualifying 2nd in the 125 Class and 18th overall from the 37 starters for the Motostar Championship which sees a mix of Moto 3 and GP125 machines scoring points for individual championships.
Race one saw a hectic first couple of laps throughout the field. Andy didn’t get the best of starts and ended the first lap down the field but a determined first few laps saw Andy take the lead in the GP125 class and after pushing on all race ended up 11th overall.
Race two was held in front of a large bank holiday Monday crowd in improving weather conditions. This caused the setup of the Aprilia to not be as good as on the Sunday but another chaotic first lap left Andy with some work to do. The setup of the engine was causing the bike to be slow on the slower speed corners which was making it hard for Andy to climb through the order but another good ride resulted in a Second place finish at the chequered flag and a ten point championship lead after the first two races.
Donington has to be looked at as a major success for the team and far more than was expected. The data that the team now have after the weekend will be analysed by the next round, so Andy and the team can arrive at the Kent circuit – Brands Hatch, with a setup that hopefully lets them improve through the field.
